Between 11-25% of children aged 3-13 years are felt to have a speech sound (articulation) disorder. Speech sound disorders is the name given to a broad range of speech difficulties a child may experience. Some of these difficulties are developmentally appropriate up to a certain age, however if you are considering speech therapy for your child it is quite likely that the errors in your child’s speech are no longer expected for their age and they would likely benefit from some additional support. Below are a few examples of some speech errors/phonological processes we assess and treat:
- Lisps
- Gliding (for example saying “wabbit” instead of “rabbit“)
- Fronting (such as saying “tat” for “cat”)
Stuttering, also called dysfluency or stammering is an involuntary interruption to the flow of talking. Approximately 45,000 people living in New Zealand stutter. Stuttering is more common in boys than girls.
